Fall 2023 Leadership Preview

Nurturing Executive Functioning Skills in Kids will Unlock Their Full Leadership Potential

Like individual instruments in an orchestra, executive functioning skills come together to make beautiful music. It's a unique set of skills that help us focus our attention, filter out distractions, and switch mental gears when needed. But that's not all—they also empower us to make healthy decisions. These skills are not innate but can be developed over time, and they play a vital role in a child's overall development and success.

Executive functioning skills can be grouped into three categories:

Leadership for girls - working memory

Working memory

The ability to retain and recall information when needed

Leadership for girls - mental flexibility

Mental flexibility

Shifting our response or attention in response to different demands

Leadership for girls - Self-regulation

Self-regulation control

Setting priorities and pausing and thinking before acting

For 7-12 year-olds, the demands on these skills increase as they approach adolescence. It's a critical time to prepare them to effectively communicate, and manage their social interactions, school responsibilities, and extracurricular activities.

These skills are not only essential for academic achievement but also for effective leadership and organizational management in adulthood.

In our upcoming Fall Session, we'll be focusing on activities that will help practice and strengthen executive functioning skills. Whether it's in our leadership training or physical activities, we'll create a challenging yet supportive environment where creative play and social connections thrive.

In addition to building physical literacy through games, circuits, relays, and learning introductory sport skills in basketball, volleyball, floor hockey, soccer, and field hockey, here are just some of the leadership themes we'll be tackling in the Fall 2023 session!
